ARMED robbers put a shopkeeper in hospital during a violent raid early today on the South Side of Glasgow.
One thug battered the 62-year-old with the butt of a gun when the shop owner refused to hand over cash from the till.
Machine-gun carrying cops and a dog unit swooped to seal off streets in the Shawlands area as they hunted the raiders.
Local residents were stunned as a cordon was thrown around the Key News Plus store in Glasgow’s busy Kilmarnock Road.
Rush-hour traffic was diverted causing disruption for commuters.
At least seven police cars rushed to the scene within minutes of the alarm being raised.
Khalid Bhatti, 62, had been working in the shop shortly after 7am when the armed robbers burst in and demanded cash.
The brave shop owner challenged the raiders and refused to hand over any money.
He was smashed on the head with the butt of a gun and suffered a deep gash to his forehead.
Paramedics were quickly on the scene and rushed the bleeding victim to the nearby Victoria Infirmary for treatment.
The robbery stunned staff in the family shop. Mr Bhatti’s shocked son Shoaib, 24, said: “Three Asian guys with a gun came into the shop and demanded cash.
“My dad refused to give in and they hit him on the head with the handle.
“The till fell to the floor and they ran out.
“My dad needs stitches but should be okay. He was lucky.
“Nothing like this has ever happened before. People are getting desperate.”
Armed police, a dog unit and several police cars attended the incident and sealed off a 200metre section near the scene, close to Coustonholm Road.
One stunned neighbour, who lives in a flat across from the shop, said: “I heard a lot of shouting and saw a number of police officers running about the area.
“When I saw the armed police turn up I knew something really serious had happened.
“The ambulance was on the scene within minutes.”
The newsagents shop is on Kilmarnock Road and lies between Shawlands Arcade and Newlands.
Detectives were taking statements from witnesses and fellow shop owners this morning.
It’s understood three men were involved in the robbery, which happened around 7.10am.
A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: “We are investigating a robbery in Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands.
“One of the suspects presented what looked to be a firearm.
Inquiries are at a very early stage and we are appealing for witnesses.”
